Top 20 Home Security Tips

  1. Replace Hollow-core exterior doors with solid wood, fiberglass or steel.

  2. Make sure exterior door hinges face inside rather than the outside where a burglar can remove the pins and take the door out of it's frame.

  3. Sliding glass doors can be secured by adding a bolt lock or use a charley bar to secure the door.

  4. Add bars to basement windows.

  5. Most home burglaries happen during the day.  So get into the habit of locking all doors and windows when you go out.

  6. Invest in high quality, deadbolt locks for all exterior doors.

  7. Alarm systems work.  Almost all convicted burglars say they avoid homes protected with an alarm system.

  8. Do not leave an answering machine message saying you're not at home.

  9. Use timers to turn lights, televisions and sound systems on and off at different times when you're away.

  10. Install motion-detecting outdoor floodlights around your home.

  11. Join your neighborhood watch program.

  12. Report suspicious persons, vehicles and activity to your local police department.

  13. Get to know your neighbors.

  14. Stop mail and newspaper deliveries while you're away.

  15. Use an etching pen to mark an ID number, like your drivers License number on valuables.

  16. Prune overgrown trees and shrubs from in front of windows and doors.

  17. Follow the manufacturers instructions to program your garage door opener with a unique code.

  18. Burglars know to look in mailboxes, under doormats and above doorways for keys.

  19. Don't put your name or address on your key ring.  It might lead a thief right to your door, with key in hand.

  20. If a previous resident may still have keys to your home, change the locks.
